Android Apps

Cool Android Apps

Always the tinkerer, i like to fool around with many of my electronic devices and learn about and customize them. My Android powered smartphone was yet another victim of my curiosity and i soon found myself installing custom ROMs, making some adjustments and looking for apps to replace the functionality of all of the Google apps which i removed (i hate Google for a number of reasons).

Since i do not use Google Play at all, i began looking for alternative repositories and quickly found F-Droid, which is a great repository for free, open source Android apps that are compiled from source. F-Droid does not require you to create an account and by default they do not show apps that contain advertising or promote non-free services. Once the F-Droid app is installed, it will notify you when an update is available for any app you installed from their repository. The selection of apps is relatively small at the moment, but the list appears to be constantly growing and they have an active community forum where members can suggest new apps. Other good places to look for apps are GitHub, XDA Developers, AndroidCentral and the Google developers websites.

Following are some of my favorite Android apps:

App Description Root

AdAway

AdAway

AdAway is a compact ad blocker that uses less resources than AdBlock+ by leveraging the hosts file. Because it writes to the host file, root privileges are required. Yes F-Droid FOSS
AFWall+

AFWall+

AFWall+ provides a GUI to easily manipulate the Linux iptables firewall, so in essence, you could call it a firewall for Android. Any firewall app worth its salt will require root privileges. AFWall+ comes packaged with the iptables and BusyBox binaries. Yes F-Droid FOSS
Count It!

Count It!

A simple little app that provides multiple counters for… counting stuff. No F-Droid FOSS

A great little password manager for storing all your passwords, log-on credentials or even text snippets. It is compatible with the KeePass Password Safe database files for the desktop. No F-Droid FOSS
Lesser Pad

Lesser Pad

A nice and simple app for organizing and storing text notes. No F-Droid FOSS

OS Monitor

OS Monitor

OS Monitor is a very cool app which allows you to monitor various aspects of the Android OS including network connections, running processes and logs as well as providing a system information tool. Yes (for full functionality) F-Droid FOSS
OsmAnd

OsmAnd

OsmAnd is a map application like Google Maps, but massively better! OsmAnd uses Open Street Maps instead of Google and has a ton of features which can be extended further with plug-ins. Some of the features are GPS voice guided navigation, favorites, GPS status, POI display, adding audio and video clips to your locations and much more. It also works off-line so you do not need a data connection. The free version of OsmAnd is fully functional with the exception of a limit of the number of downloads you are allowed, such as for maps. No F-Droid FOSS
Timer

Timer

Timer is a very simple stopwatch and countdown timer app. No F-Droid FOSS
Timesheet

Timesheet

TimeSheet is a very simple app that allows you to keep track of the time you spend on billable jobs or other time-sensitive projects. No F-Droid FOSS

Units

Units is a rather powerful calculator and unit conversion app for converting from one unit of measure to another, such as from inches to centimeters. No F-Droid FOSS
